Kiddyland and the mall of the future.
May 18th, 2006Well today we all had a little assignment for school, to go out and explore and find a place that we want our project to be about. I ended up changing my spot, so I won’t go into detail yet.
But anyway, in the afternoon, I went with Mark, one of the guys from my dorm, to meet up with this really awesome Japanese student in our class, Mia. She was to take us to Kiddyland, which is this super huge and great toy store in Omottesando. So thanks to our nifty cel phones, which really are no comparision to any of the celphones most Japanese people have we picked a station to meet at…and went. It gets really crowded on the subways sometimes. I can’t remember what day it was exactly, but we were on the train during one of those really busy times and we were very squished. But it was fun, cause you couldn’t fall down if you wanted to, but I could see how it would get old if you had to travel that way day after day. Alright so back to my original story. So we met Mia and she took us to Kiddyland and we realized that we must have walked past it the 2nd day we were here and got trecked around on this really confusing tour to familiarize us with our surroundings. So Kiddyland is like Sanrio on major steriods, again organized by floors…so you have 6 floors, one with Hello Kitty, and one with toys for boys, and one with other things, and so on and so on. It’s just cuteness everywhere! I staked it out and I’ll be going back later for goodies for everyone. Daniel would be proud of me, I just got one folder, b/c I needed to put all my papers in something, and then I got one capsule toy. They’re the greatest and nothing compared to the one’s in America. They have really awesome toys in the ones here. I was trying to get a certain one for my sister. I didn’t get exactly the one I wanted, but it’s still cool…but I’ll have to try once more before I go. I miss you Rachel, wish you were here and could come to these places with me. We’d have sooooo much fun!!! Maybe one day. Alright so again back to my story. So we explored more of kiddyland and then we wanted to walk around some more, so Mia took us to this new mall that was built not long ago. It’s on this hill and when you walk inside the walkways mimic the slope of the hill outside, so you essentially could walk the entire mall by just going around the spiral walkway, but there are also escalators, if you want to get around quicker. It was like the mall of the future…(see the movie), b/c it had this really interesting ambient noise and everything was glass and aluminum or painted white, so it was super clean feeling and like you were in 2001 space odessey. The stores were all super nice high end stores, that you can only drool in. We went into a cool glasses shop, and started trying on all these awesome glasses, that were like all $500 just for the frames. I fell in love with this green pair of glasses, and many others actually.

So I know where to come for frames, next time I want a cool pair of glasses. So that was pretty much it for that night. We walked from Omottesando to Shibuya and all of a sudden everything seemed much closer than you would think. The trains can be decieving as far as how far away things feel. So now I know I can walk a lot more places than I thought and I’ve got a way better sense of how Tokyo is laid out…although at this point in the trip, I’ve barely touched the tip of the iceburg as they might say. Tokyo is huge!
